Dad’s voice came through the speaker again.
“Ryan, answer one question.”
Ryan said nothing.
“What happened to your first wife?”
Diane suddenly stepped between us.
“Enough. This is ridiculous.”
Dad’s voice hardened.
“No, Diane. It’s long overdue.”
Ryan looked at his mother.
“Mom…”
She shook her head.
“Don’t.”
That single word told me everything.
They had rehearsed this silence before.
Dad continued.
“Her name was Laura Bennett. Seven years ago, she was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital with a fractured ankle, three broken ribs, and bruising around her throat.”
My blood ran cold.
Ryan immediately interrupted.
“She fell down the stairs.”
Dad laughed once.
“That’s what you told the police.”
I looked at Ryan.
“You told me she left you because she was unstable.”
Ryan’s face tightened.
“She was.”
Dad answered before I could.
“She wasn’t.”
Silence.
“Laura told the hospital staff that Ryan had attacked her.”
Ryan stared at the phone.
“And then,” Dad continued, “she disappeared from the city three days later.”
I whispered,
“Where did she go?”
Dad paused.
“She didn’t disappear.”
My heart began pounding.
“She was placed in a protected domestic-violence program. She gave a statement. She filed for divorce.”
Ryan suddenly shouted,
“That statement was withdrawn!”
Dad replied calmly,
“Because someone threatened her.”
Diane’s face had gone completely white.
I looked at her.
“You knew?”
She lowered her eyes.
Dad continued.
“Laura wasn’t the only woman Ryan hurt.”
Ryan slammed his fist against the counter.
“Stop!”
Dad ignored him.
“The hospital records contain photographs. Statements. Dates. Everything.”
Then Dad said something that made Ryan freeze.
“And there’s one more thing.”
“What?” I asked.
“Laura wasn’t the reason I called you today.”
I stared at the phone.
“Then why?”
Dad took a breath.
“Because I received a copy of a document yesterday.”
Ryan whispered,
“No…”
Dad continued.
“A life-insurance policy.”
My stomach dropped.
“Whose?”
Dad answered,
“Yours.”
Nobody moved.
Ryan had taken out a $3 million policy on me.
And Diane was listed as the beneficiary.
I looked at my husband.
He didn’t deny it.
Instead, he slowly backed toward the door.
My brother blocked his path.
Ryan looked at me.
“Emily, I can explain.”
“No.”
I picked up my phone.
“You’ve had years to explain Laura.”
Then I looked at Diane.
“And you’ve had years to keep quiet.”
Diane began crying.
But Dad wasn’t finished.
“There is another document, Emily.”
“What document?”
“A second insurance policy.”
My heart stopped.
Dad said,
“This one was taken out on Laura.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
And suddenly I understood why he had spent years making sure I never found those hospital records.
Because Laura hadn’t simply escaped him.
She had discovered what Ryan planned to do next.
And she had left behind evidence.
Evidence that could finally prove what everyone had been too afraid to say aloud.
Dad’s final words came through the speaker:
“Emily, don’t go anywhere with Ryan.”
Then the front door opened.
Two police officers walked inside.
And behind them stood a woman I had never seen before.
She looked directly at Ryan.
Then she said quietly:
“My name is Laura.”
Ryan stopped breathing.
